Philippe Gérard

Conductor

Philippe Gérard completed his musical studies at the Royal Conservatoire of Brussels, where he was awarded, amongst other honours, First Prizes and advanced diplomas in piano and chamber music, as well as a First Prize in orchestral conducting. An active pianist both in Belgium and abroad, he has focused on chamber music whilst developing a career as a conductor.

Regularly invited to perform at most Belgian festivals (Wallonia, Flanders, Eté Mosan, Juillet Musical d'Aulne, Midis-Minimes, Rencontres Inattendues, Nuits de Beloeil and Seneffe…), he also performs frequently abroad, throughout Europe, the Middle East and Asia, giving concerts and masterclasses.

Passionate about singing, he has conducted numerous opera productions (Haydn, Mozart, Offenbach, Weill, Rihm…), notably at the Opéra Royal de Wallonie (François Aubert's La Forêt bleue and Ravel's L'Enfant et les sortilèges) and served as assistant choir director at the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie (notably at the Innsbruck Festival, where he was choir director).

As principal conductor of a chamber orchestra, the Chapelle Musicale de Tournai, he has conducted many other Belgian orchestras (OPL, ONB, ORCW, etc.) and orchestras abroad. He also collaborates regularly with ensembles of young musicians (the orchestras of the Royal Conservatoire of Brussels, UCL-OSEL, etc.).

He is a professor of orchestral conducting and accompanist for the singing and opera classes at the Royal Conservatoire of Brussels.
